MIT’s Dr. Robert Langer Wins 2008 Millennium Technology Prize
The 2008 Millennium Technology Prize was awarded to Dr. Robert Langer for developing new biomaterials used for controlling drug delivery in the human body. Professor Langer's innovations have had a significant impact on fighting cancer, heart disease, and numerous other diseases. Dr. Langer has been cited as "one of history's most prolific inventors in medicine". He holds 380 patents, has published 680 articles and 13 books, has licensed products to about 80 companies, and is known as the father of controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering. His research laboratory at MIT is the largest biomedical engineering lab in the world.
Dr. Langer has discovered and developed many advanced drug delivery systems that have had a significant impact on fighting cancer, heart disease, mental health illnesses and numerous other diseases. More than 100 million people a year are using some form of advanced drug delivery.
The Millennium Technology Prize is known as the world’s largest technology prize and is sponsored by the government of Finland in partnership with Finnish industry.
